Life Outside the Lab

I truly believe the best discoveries happen outside of your comfort zone. I love exploring different disciplines in order to push the bounds of both who I am and what I can achieve. Outside of my research, I spent my time creating art, making music, and teaching.

Music

Music is a core part of my identity and has forever changed both how I collaborate with others and how I express myself.

San Diego Unified School District Honor Choir

2021-2026

I have been the only singer from my high school to join the school district honor choir. I performed as an alto, and was selected as a soloist for three years in a row out of about 100 fellow choir members, one of the top honors for vocalists within my school district.

National Anthem Performer

2024-2026

I was selected to be the national anthem singer for my high school. I collaborated with the school's band and also performed as a soloist. I performed for 11 different sports in total and my performances were spread across 4 different venues, each with a different sound system and acoustics. I was also invited to perform at events hosted at my school, such as the HOKA Postal Nationals, a cross-country running event.

St. Kieran's Adult Choir and Substitute Cantor

2022-2026

As both a member of the choir and a substitute cantor, I have to balance many different styles of singing, which can vary significantly within even just one service. In addition to this, my role as a substitute cantor requires me to learn new repertoire each week and lead the congregation.

Private Vocal Instruction

2022-2026

I have had 8 years of vocal instruction. For the past 4 years, I have taken lessons from an opera singer and have specialized in classical, jazz, and musical theatre styles. I enjoy singing in different languages and have experience singing in English, French, Spanish, Latin, and Italian.

Art

Art is one of my earliest passions. I have continuously used drawing, painting, embroidery, sewing, and digital design to understand and communicate with the world around me. I enjoy translating my observations into something tangible and visually engaging.

Portrait Drawing

When I draw, I primarily create portraits of people I find interesting. Whether it be someone's facial structure or the way I care for them, I love expressing my interest in someone's uniqueness via my portraits.

Sewing

Sewing forces me to blend my creativity with problem-solving. I love designing my own cross-stitch pieces and gifting them to my friends. Each piece has the person's specific interests and qualities in mind.

Teaching & Outreach

The most rewarding part of learning is being able to share that knowledge with others. Through teaching, mentorship, and educational outreach, I enjoy helping build confidence in areas that once seemed so intimidating.

Catechism Teacher

As a kindergarten teacher, I developed lessons and activities that made faith approachable and attention-grabbing.

Metagenomics Program

Co-developed a student-led educational program that introduced high school students to both wet and dry lab molecular biology concepts.

Music Non-Profit

I led Minim, a non-profit where high schoolers give free or reduced fee lessons to local children, for one year. In that short span of time, we increased our number of students by over 300%.

Biotech Club

I hosted a speaker series of local biotechnology professionals in order for club members to form connections and be exposed to the many opportunities available to them in the field of biotechnology.

Culture

I am fascinated by the many ways people preserve identity, history, and tradition. I spend much of my free time exploring music, language, folklore, and culture from all around the world.

M.E.Ch.A. Outreach

As the outreach and social media coordinator for my high school's M.E.Ch.A. chapter, I produced social media graphics that took inspiration from Mexican design motifs. In addition to this, I produced works of art that were displayed around campus, bringing attention to Mexican-American role models and diversity between Mexican states.

Languages & Linguistics

Language offers a unique window into culture and history. I'm currently on the path to becoming fluent in Spanish and am passively learning French. I also love learning about other languages and their unique linguistics characteristics.

Folk Music

I enjoy exploring folk customs through music, and love covering Appalachian and Mexican folk songs.

Folk Costume Sewing

I love creating my own versions of the folk costumes from the regions I draw my ancestry from. I have produced folklorico dresses from Chihuahua and dirndls from Bavaria.
